What is Electroforming?

One of the signature techniques I use to create my jewelry is electroforming - a slow, intricate process that allows each piece to take on its own organic form.

Electroforming is both a science and an art. During this process, each piece is carefully suspended in a specialized solution for 18 to 24 hours, where chemistry and electricity work together to allow layers of copper to gradually build around the gemstones. This results in a naturally flowing, free-form bezel that embraces each stone in a way that cannot be replicated by traditional casting methods.

Once electroforming is complete, every piece is plated in palladium, which acts as a protective barrier to prevent copper from migrating to the surface. The final step is a thick plating of 18k gold, giving the piece its warm, luminous finish.

All of my electroformed jewelry is created using the same process, regardless of the material you select. The difference lies in the ring band, which is handcrafted in your chosen material - Sterling Silver, 14k Gold-Filled, or Solid 14k Gold. The entire ring is then finished according to your selected option, ensuring both beauty and durability.

Because electroforming is a hands-on and unpredictable process, each piece takes 3–5 days to complete, from start to finish. No two pieces are ever exactly alike - a true celebration of natural imperfection.

Like all plated jewelry, electroformed pieces may naturally show signs of wear over time - especially with frequent use or exposure to moisture, chemicals, or skin chemistry. This is a normal part of how plated jewelry ages and does not indicate a defect in the piece.

With gentle care and mindful wear, your electroformed jewelry will remain beautiful for years. Many customers enjoy watching their pieces develop subtle character over time, much like a well-loved heirloom.

Each piece is handcrafted individually, making it not only jewelry, but a small work of art - meant to be worn, cherished, and appreciated in its natural evolution.

How to Care for Your Electroformed Jewelry

Electroformed jewelry requires gentle care to preserve its finish and prevent premature tarnishing or wear, particularly on the electroformed bezel.

To maintain your piece:

  • Remove your jewelry before bathing, showering, swimming, or using hot tubs, pools, or the ocean

  • Avoid contact with household cleaning products, hand creams, perfumes, or hand sanitizers

  • Store your piece in a cool, dry place — your Moondrop Creations jewelry box is ideal

  • Gently clean using the microfiber cloth included with your purchase

With proper care, your electroformed jewelry will continue to age beautifully and remain a meaningful piece for years to come.
